Vasectomy

The Community Vasectomy Service (CVS) is delivered under the NHS by Sussex Medical Chambers in the heart of our local communities, which means outside of the acute hospital settings.

The service provides high quality vasectomy under local anaesthetic, in a Community setting, to all males over the age of 18 and are registered with a GP in the NHS West Sussex CCG area. This service is available free when accompanied by a GP referral. For Private services please call 01903495881 to be guided through that process.

A vasectomy is a highly effective form of male contraception. It involves making a small cut in the tubes that carry sperm from each testicle and sealing them. This prevents sperm from mixing with your semen. The procedure is usually considered permanent, although you can choose to have it reversed.

Assessment Appointment, Support and Advice

Your first appointment with the Consultant will be a pre-operative appointment and scheduled within 4 weeks of receipt of the referral from your GP.

This pre-operative individualised assessment will include a process of counselling and consent. The counselling and advice session on sterilisation will include a full range of information about and access to other long-term reversible methods of contraception. This should include information on the advantages, disadvantages and relative failure rates of each method. Where applicable, your partner is encouraged to attend the pre-operative appointment.

Vasectomy Procedure

A bilateral vasectomy will be performed under local anaesthetic using a scalpel or non-scalpel technique (dependent on the surgeons decision). The procedure is straightforward and only takes around 15 to 20 minutes. Your surgeon will make a small cut in your scrotum to reach the vas deferens — the tubes that carry sperm from your testicles. The tubes will be cut and then tied or sealed with heat. They’ll then close the area with dissolvable stitches leaving a very minimally visible entry cut.

Post procedure care

You will usually be able to go home shortly after the procedure on the same day. It is normal to feel some discomfort or tenderness in the area for a few days following the procedure. You will be provided with comprehensive post vasectomy advice including pain relief, wound care, resuming normal activities including sexual intercourse, contraception prior to clearance and semenology testing.

We also offer telephone support for patients if they have issues or queries during the post-surgical period prior to discharge from the service.

PVSA testing to be carried out in accordance with Association of Biomedical Andrologists, the British Andrology Society and the British Association of Urological Surgeons Guidelines (2016)

Post Vasectomy Semen Analysis (PVSA)

To ensure that the procedure has been successful, and therefore have no risk of pregnancy, you will need undertake semen analysis after 16 weeks from your procedure date. A detailed leaflet, and semen collection kits will be provided after your procedure.

You will need to continue to use alternative methods of contraception for at least 16 weeks post vasectomy, and it is recommended until you are informed your semen no longer contains sperm.
