Understanding DEXA Scanning

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is a quick, low-dose imaging test that provides a detailed assessment of body composition and bone health. It can measure fat mass, lean muscle mass, bone density, and how body fat is distributed—offering more insight than weight or BMI alone.

What is a DEXA scan?

DEXA stands for Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry which is a means of measuring bone mineral density.  A DEXA scan is a method of using a very narrow band of x-rays to examine the lower spine, the hip (or the forearm) of someone who is suspected of having Osteoporosis. The results provide a highly accurate assessment of the amount of bone at the site examined. The scans are quick, safe and painless.

You may need a DEXA scan if you have (or have had) any of the following:

  • Osteoporosis, or a family history of Osteoporosis
  • A fracture after a minor fall or injury
  • Early menopause or early hysterectomy
  • A family history of fractures
  • Low body mass index (BMI) < 21
  • Suffer from an eating disorder
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions (irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease)
  • Are on medication which may increase the risk of osteoporosis
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)

To arrange a scan, simply speak to your GP and asked to be referred to Sussex Medical Chambers DEXA clinic (01903 503447).
