Circumcision
What is circumcision?
Circumcision is an operation to remove the foreskin, which is the flap of skin that covers the head (end) of the penis. The foreskin is cut away and the remaining skin edges stitched together.
Why is circumcision carried out?
Circumcision procedures can be required for a number of reasons. Your Consultant Urologist can advise you on the following conditions:
- Phimosis is a condition where the foreskin is tight and unable to retract over the head of the penis (glans). If the foreskin doesn’t separate naturally, it can cause problems including swelling, pain or difficulty urinating
- Recurrent infection under the foreskin
- Acute Balanoposthitis, which is a condition caused by an infection that leads to the foreskin becoming red and swollen
This is a delicate issue and as well as the physical discomfort caused by foreskin problems, they can cause psychological distress.
How is circumcision carried out?
The procedure normally takes about 30-45 minutes and you will be able to go home on the same day.
With our expert surgical team, the procedure can usually be carried out under local anaesthetic allowing you a quicker recovery and ability to go home within an hour of the procedure. Should a general anaesthetic be required, you can discuss this with the surgeon at the pre-assessment appointment.
During the procedure, the entire foreskin will be removed using an incision just behind the head of the penis. The remaining skin will be sutured to the skin on the length of penis. This leaves the head of the penis completely exposed, with no redundant skin. The stitches that are placed are dissolvable and will start to fall out between one to two weeks after surgery.
What happens after the surgery?
In the recovery area, you will be monitored for any bleeding, pain or discomfort. Once settled, you will be allowed to go home with medication (should this be recommended) and aftercare advice. Our surgical team remains available to you for any advice you may require.
